Do you deserve attention or how to get people listen to you

Lisa, a friend of mine and a young pretty woman, has always been shy and had a quiet and thin voice. Several times over the past few years she told me sorrowful stories about herself trying to say something aloud and nobody paying attention. Usually the scene of action was at her work.
She is a technical writer and works on hardware and software projects. Part of her job is to sit down together with technical specialists and walk through particular topics. Also they have regular team meetings and ad-hoc discussions within their small team of writers. And in addition they usually have regular staff meetings for managers, technical people, analysts, marketing and sales people and writers where it is expected that main news get circulated, issues get raised and ideas and opinions are expressed. Any kind of planned or ad-hoc meeting usually became a severe ordeal for Lisa.
It happened so that the majority of Lisa’s colleagues always were men and apparently many of that people were on average less timid than Lisa. Also there often were quite a few of highly qualified experts on the team. Their opinions were respected and welcomed. Read more

Getting nervous on Sunday evening. Making yourself get up early on Monday. Making coffee, getting better. Just a little better. Walking out. Driving to the office. Getting late. Who cares! Late? Who cares! Hate this job.
That’s extreme.
More often we are simply not excited. We don’t hate our job but also don’t love it. Just doing it because we have to, have bills to pay, have family, have to work for living. And the job is what we know, were doing for some time. It feels safe. Read more

Ever asked yourself one of the questions below?

4. What if my boss is thinking of firing me?
5. What if I have to work with Bob/Sally/etc.?
6. What if I’m asked to do the work I don’t have enough skills to do?

I have a friend of mine who’s stuck with her life and career path. She is 25 — pretty young. She has a degree in engineering and worked in software industry for a few years — initially as a tester and later as a developer.
Last year she’d changed 3 jobs in a couple of months. The reason is that the work became not fulfilling. In fact, she describes her jobs as unbearable.
The situation is quite common. Many of us have been there. Time goes, our views change and values develop. So it’s not a surprise that our comprehension of our own day to day activities changes too. But where is the good solution? What steps should one take to restore (or find) the balance? Read more

People are NOT useless or stupid!

Just stumbled upon this post:
Here is the most impressive part:
“People are generally useless!
Seriously, the general public are idiots!
I have worked in retail stores, bookmakers, at football stadiums, in stores… and in EVERY case, the stupidity of the general public was incredible.”
I understand the disappointment but the judgment looks way too quick and easy for me. Read more

I’ve calculated these pretty simple figures based on ESL links collections at the UsingEnglish.com web site. Some of you may disagree or think that this is trivial, but for me it looks impressive. BTW, I do also think that the term “podcast” may be indeed a bit repelling for non-techies and those who prefer visual or reading channels. Read more

It’s not easy, but doable.
Sometimes people do not work well together. The fact that each of them is a nice (smart, good, reliable, etc.) person does not matter for their collaboration because they are too different to a level where they cannot establish productive relationships.
Here’s what could help: make the people collaborate. Read more
